Its been 12 years plus since I last visited the area and so we decided to celebrate Independence Day at the park with some family. The drive took almost 2 hours but from Syracuse we took the scenic way down along Route 20 and then between the lakes of Seneca and Cayuga all the way down. We checked out the Amish store, Sauders, in Seneca Falls and took home some delicious food.
We made it to the park just in time to start cooking up some chicken thighs and hot dogs. It was hot and humid with temperatures in the high 80's. We were grateful for an occasional breeze and some cloud cover.
After eating and enjoying some fun and playing a few games of corn hole we were ready to do some hiking in the gorge. Our kids enjoyed running along and exploring with their cousins.
At the first overlook I noticed that the entire entrance was completely renovated from way back when and it had a nice fresh look to it. To enter the gorge itself we had to descend several flights of stairs. And then there were many more stairs to come.
Once we entered the gorge, I thought that there would be a nice breeze whistling through the narrow corridors and that temperature would be cooler but to my surprise the was thick and it was a lot muggier then up top. Then came the heavy sweating.
The gorge walk through took us about an hour which included taking several drink breaks and other breaks to deal with this or that issue. But it was nice to finally make it the top get some cooler air and breeze.
The kids insisted on cooling off in the already congested and over chlorinated pool. And thats what they got before the thunderclouds rolled in from the south. We were grateful that it never rained but the breeze picked up and the temperatures were more tolerable.
For dinner we stopped to eat at a restaurant on Seneca Lake, but the food wasn't very impressive and not worth mentioning. We enjoyed the company of our family and the gorgeous views of the marina and lake in the background. And as always it was a nice day spent with my gorgeous wife and wonderful kids in the Land of the Free!
