HIKING MOUNT BLAKE

43/46
Elevation: 3960 ft
Colvin Range
My 23rd peak

After a short rest on Colvin we decided to head over to Blake. I knew from reading some hiking blogs that the 1.3 mile hike to Blake from Colvin had a steep descent to a col then another steep ascent to the summit. But starting out from Colvin the trail was flat and continued like that for about 0.3 mi. Then things went downhill quickly. It has been a very rainy summer in all of Upstate New York, including the ADK, so this part of the trail was extremely muddy and slippery. So it made for a slow descent to about  200 ft of flat ground and then the ascent. So far I have only had one really steep col experience which was coming from Giant to Rocky Peak Ridge. This ascent wasn't as bad but it was challenging.

There were two sections of tall ladders closer to the summit. We ended up hiking exactly one hour to the tree covered summit. There was some open rock surrounded by trees which represented the summit but since there was a group of people already hanging out there we stayed on the trail and had a snack.

The View

After a summit photo we turned around and head back to Colvin. Somewhere in my reading, someone said that if you hike another 200 yards toward the pinnacle there is a rock outcropping with allows for a  better view toward the southwest, however, we really wanted to get back on the trail because there was a chance of rain later in the afternoon.
