GERMAINES LUAU, OAHU

When visiting any of the Hawaiian islands a luau is a must do. There are 4 major luaus in Oahu and here are the reasons that I chose Germaine's: it's on the western side of the island and therefore we had an opportunity to see yet another side, they offer a free shuttle from Waikiki (that alone was worth it and fun with the "cousins"), they don't charge for kids 5 years old and under (all the other charge between $60-80 for the kids), and they have the best Hawaiian show at the end.

Upon arriving to the location on the beach, we were all greeted with seashell necklaces and then each family got a photo. Ours actually came out really nice so we ended up purchasing a 5" x 7" for a small price.

We were all then asked to save a seat at the tables set up on the beach. And then the festivities began. While we looking for a spot to sit, one of the hula dancers approached Alexis, my 5 year old daughter, and began speaking with her. She was very friendly and welcoming to the kids, and she answered several questions that we had. Later she helped us out in carrying the kids plates back to the table. There were a few traditional Hawaiian greetings, singing, and presentations on stage. Then everyone proceeded to the location where the pig was cooked in a traditional way, in a sand pit with lava rocks. After a ceremonous pig unearthing and transferring everyone returned to their seat. Tables were called in an orderly fashion and everyone got their food at fast pace.

The food was delicious and we tried a couple of the traditional Hawaiian dishes. My favorite, of course, was the pork which was simply salted with Hawaiian sea salt. After everyone had an opportunity to get second helpings, the show started and lasted for over an hour. Both the kids and the adults were impressed. They represented all of the different native Polynesian tribes really well. The audience was captivated really well by all of the dancing. There were two songs that called for audience participation on stage and Alexis had the opportunity to do some dancing. They had two dances that really intrigued me because both the men and women performers actually spoke in the native language for the whole dance without any translation.

After the concluding remarks, everyone hit the buses and were transported to their hotels. The tour escort was entertaining all the way home. This helped keep everyone awake, because the ride took 30 minutes.
