HIKING DIAMONDHEAD, OAHU

With the kids being older since our last big trip, and Adrian has already hiked in the Adirondacks, we couldn't miss a hiking opportunity for the whole family. There is not much to say, other than we love to hike.

The nice part about Diamond Head is that it is a short distance, a 15 minute drive, just outside of Waikiki Beach and Honolulu. Previous research had revealed that getting to the parking lot as close to the top as possible required getting there by 8:30 am and that is what we did. The weather was actually very favorable with cloudy skies and an occasional misty drizzle. About a quarter of a mile, the trail is paved and the remainder is hard packed dirt with some patches of rock. Adrian walked until we got to the dirt trail and then it was more challenging for him so we had a luxury ride to the top.

As seen in the second photo, it was a busy trail. Honestly, it was like a traffic jam at times as people really don't know how to pass or pull over and get out of the way.

As we ascending, the trail began to wind more up the steeper terrain. We went through 2 tunnels. And  believe it or not, the most challenging part was the long sections of stairs.

After a good sweat on the stairs, we were reward with amazing views at 762 ft above sea level and a really nice breeze. The duration of time was about 45 minutes for just over a mile. With the spectacular views, we took a hundred photos in each directions.

It was still a warm day, so there was a bit of haze in the distance. But it was fun to see Honolulu from a different perspective, as well as Waikiki beach.

The descent was quick and it was nice to enjoy the views again. Overall it was a nice hike. Distance was around 2.12 miles round trip. There was a nice gift shop near the parking lot and some nice benches for wearied hikers.
